Why does something bad have to happen to make us think positive?

Most people who have near-death experiences report some common feelings. Why do you think that is?

Now, I am not talking about what their experience of death is like. I am referring to their attitude toward life. Almost every one reports feeling more connected to humanity and less concerned about self.

In 1973, when Stevie Wonder came out of a four-day coma after an automobile accident, he deepened his commitment to helping his fellow man. “I will not be operating so much ‘on’ time as ‘in’ time,” he said, meaning that he would strive to help others before it was too late.

This is exactly what people in similar circumstances report they feel – an overwhelming desire to be of service. For many of us, it seems to take a severe shakeup or a close call with death to wake us up to our own sense of purpose and our own sense of nature. Just like Ebeneezer Scrooge, in the story “A Christmas Carol.” He had to be shown his own death before the spirits could convince him to change his ways.

How would you live differently if you had just come back from the brink of death? Would you pay more attention to your business or to your family? What would you treasure? What would you stop doing? What would you start?

Maybe it doesn’t have to take a near-death experience to live every day with gratitude, and to create the most complete life you can have. What are your first steps?

Your mind controls your body

Do you think that what you believe can have a significant affect on your physical health? I do and have had the courage to teach others the same beliefs. For many years Dr. Albert Bandura of Stanford University, has been the world’s leading authority on efficacy theory. Efficacy theory is a scientific way to describe how our beliefs about our abilities affect those same abilities and, indeed, our entire lives.

For almost 20 years, I have been studying people, their behaviour and how what they believe affects everything they are and do. Dr. Bandura has been doing research for about 40 years, trying to determine just how this works. He found that our beliefs about our ability to change health habits, and about the degree of control we have over our lives, have a profound affect on our health.

These beliefs determine whether we will actually do what we need to do in order to stay healthy. They also determine how well we handle stress. Excessive stress has been linked directly to weakness of the immune system.

Bandura’s researchers found that it is impossible to predict how well a given patient will do based on medical evidence alone. Arthritis patients learned to control their pain without drugs, as well as they did with drugs. They also reduced their dependence on doctors and slowed the progression of the arthritis.

I am certain that our beliefs directly affect our health and well-being. Thanks to Bandura and others like him, the research to help explain how this works is also available to everyone.

If you only had a year to live

If a doctor told you had a year to live, what would you do? Would you do something amazing? Or perform some great feat to let your life speak without words.

Some time ago, I was in a group that was discussing how to get the most out of life. The question arose about what one would do, if they had only a year to live. Some people said they would travel around the world, others said they would try to heal relationships, and others said they would spend time in meditation and prayer.

There was on person, Diane, who had the best answer of them all. She didn’t hesitate a moment before she said loudly and clearly, “Get a second opinion!” And then she added, “And maybe a third and fourth one too.”

You see, when Diane was told she had terminal cancer many years ago that is exactly what she did. She said, “Maybe I have cancer, but it doesn’t have to be terminal,” and she went looking for doctors who would join her in developing an effective strategy to beat the disease. And she did beat it. Diane doesn’t give her power away to anyone just because they are supposed to be experts.

If you want to read something eye opening, get hold of a copy of “The Experts Speak.” This book has been around for a while, but it is a 392-page collection of noted experts being wrong about almost everything. The section on doctors will astound you.

Don’t ever accept a death sentence from a doctor or a pronouncement of doom from a so-called authority. After all, according to the experts, the sun goes around the earth, smoking is good for us, there is no global warming, and the Titanic is unsinkable!

Happiness is a state of mind

What if you inherited a machine that was guaranteed to make you happy, but you had no idea how to operate it?

Now, if you are like most folks, you’d probably move heaven and earth until you figured out how it worked, wouldn’t you? The fact is, you were born with all the resources to make yourself very happy and successful. Unfortunately, you didn’t arrive with an instruction manual.

It has been left up to you to figure it out. Isn’t it strange, then, that most folks don’t even bother? They don’t read psychology, they don’t take classes or seminars on human behavior, and they don’t work with counselors, teachers or other professionals who could help them make the most of their potential.

Instead, they are content to bump along, not really expecting much out of themselves or of anyone else. Oh, they may go to a lot of trouble to learn to speak Chinese or to scuba dive, or even seek out the latest computer software. But they never take the time to learn about their own “software” – how their mind works.

Do you suppose this is because no one has ever told them that we are all programmed to achieve happiness and success? It is true. All we have to do is learn to operate the program. By that I mean educate ourselves, set goals, control our thoughts and get rid of glitches in the program that were put there by others who didn’t know better.

Sound simple? Well, it is. If you want to be happy, you can, but first you may need to do a little research.

Hopes Wishes and Dreams

How is a goal different from a wish or hope? First of all, let’s look at how they are similar. Each one is a good thing to have, and each concerns something we’d like to see happen in the future.

A wish or hope is something we long for, like children wishing on a star or a birthday wish when we blow out the candles on a cake. But it is not likely to be something we think about very much. And, if it should happen to come true, we may think of it as a miracle, something we might need a fairy godmother to grant.

Goals, however, are much different. Goals cause us to focus our energies, something like a goal in hockey or football. They’re very specific, achievable and measurable. A clearly stated goal helps us to tune into our environment. We become very sensitive to things we may not have noticed before that can help us do what we want to do.

But here’s the most important part: goals are much more likely to happen than wishes or hopes, because they are so specific and because we think about them so much. We write them down, develop action strategies to help us make them happen, and we take them very seriously.

Do you have any wishes or hopes that you’d really like to see come true? If so, why not turn them into goals and take accountability for accomplishing them? You’ll be surprised at how your life will change once you do.
